Layla Moran is a Liberal Democrat MP and the first Palestinian to enter the British House of Commons (Parliament). She was elected to represent the constituency of Oxford West and Abingdon in 2017 when she defeated the ruling Conservative candidate.
She believes in evidence based policy and is a strong advocate for innovation and investment science. She has pledged to improve infrastructure and tackle the problem of local flooding in Oxfordshire, as well as increasing school places for local children and ensuring fairer taxation.
She built her political career on community action and is a proud community activist. As a candidate, she campaigned to save local businesses and helped residents fight insensitive planning applications.
Moran's mother is a christian Palestinian from occupied Jerusalem, whilst her father is a British diplomat and Middle East specialist who served as an ambassador for the EU in countries including Egypte, Jordan, Libya and Yemen.
Moran comes from an international background and has lived in many countries including Belgium, Greece, Ethiopia, Jamaica and Jordan and speaks French fluently along with some Spanish, Arabic and Greek.
