Tunisian sports star: We play for all Arab women

You might not know the sport, but it is popular in Europe, Africa and Asia. And now it has also attracted attention in the Arab world through the participation of the national team from Tunisia.

The Tunisian women have participated in the bi-annual championship continuously since 2007, and have taken several top three placements in the African Championship campaigns.

And hopes are high at the 2017 Championship, especially due to key player Mouna Chebbah, who is by far the most successful Tunisian player. The 35-year-old star has scored more goals than all her teammates - combined. She has scored 1006 international goals while the next on the list has 277 scored goals.

Mouna Chebbah – a big star in a small sport

Tunisia plays Denmark today December 5. Denmark is a top team in the sport and has won European, World and Olympian Championship several times within the past years. Mouna Chebbah acknowledges the challenge in today’s match.

"We must believe we can win against Denmark. We have played amazing. We will do that again. Denmark is among the top five in the world, but we will chase the chance to join the next round. We must have faith in a great result”, says the sympathetic playmaker, who aims at not only playing for the points but also wants to spread the sport in the Arab world.

"I want to show all Arab women in the world that we can do something good and make a success for the sport. I believe in a good future for these young players on the team,” says Chebbah. However she fears that the winding struggle against Brazil in the second match of the tournament has made its mark before the battle against Denmark. Tunisia was very close to a sensational win against the former world champions from Brazil. It ended with a tight 23-22 victory to Brazil.

"I'm a little worried because we put all our efforts in to win against Brazil. It will be difficult against Denmark, but we will fight for the last. I believe in myself and my team,” says Chebbah.

For Mouna Chebbah the match against Denmark is of particular interest, since she in the years 2008 to 2014 played for the Danish teams Viborg and Esbjerg.
