India’s Red Brigade: Combating Harassment and Sexism

In many parts of india, harassment and sexual assault are a depressingly common reality of life. Yet a group of brave women have taken the problem into their own hands, donning red and black uniforms and patrolling the streets as the Red Brigade. 

The women publicly identify and shame men for harassment, as well as teaching local girls self defence and organise demonstrations and petitions to raise awareness of the sexual violence that women face. 

The group was formed by young women tired of the culture of silence and victim blaming that surrounds sexual violence and harassment. All too often, culprits go unpunished and the severity of their actions is not acknowledged. 

The women hope to create a society that is safer for women, where men cannot get away with gender based crime.
