Speak Up! Opening of summer camp for young Palestinians

Sixteen students between the age of 14-16 listened attentively when the Minister of Education on the 30th of July inaugurated the summer camp for young Palestinians. During the next six days the selected few will be learning basic journalistic skills and how content is created for radio.

The camp has been arranged by Radio Nisaa FM in collaboration with Deutsche Welle. As the title suggests - "Speak Up!" - the aim is to give the youth a voice through practical skills. During the upcoming week the attendees will develop different themes related to being young in Palestine. It can be a story from their community, a news story, a personal story, or a topic that addresses the interest of youth. The selected temes are to be used in 14 radio shows which will be aired this fall.

The teaching at the camp will be lead by Manuela Römer from Deutsche Welle, and four journalist students will assist her. For Römer and Maysoun Odeh Gangat, the director of NisaaFM, the project is also part of a larger aim, namely to heighten the level of media literacy among young people. This project is one of many that the two partners have created in order to teach young people how to critically navigate the information provided by the internet and social media, since this can be very challenging.
